Linda Crew

Linda Crew, whose ancestors are German, English, and Welsh, owns and operates a small fruit and vegetable farm with her husband in Corvallis, Oregon. They have employed immigrants from various Southeast Asian countries and became friends with one family from Cambodia. “After hearing some of their stories,” she says, “I began to wonder how we, as white Americans, looked to them. I then got the idea of turning their stories into a novel that would help us understand them.” The result was Children of the River, a poignant story about a young girl who escapes from the horrors of war in her native country and then has to deal with the trauma of her past experiences as she learns to cope with a new life in an American high school.

Children of the River won numerous awards, including Honorable Mention in the Fifth Annual Delacorte Press Prize for an Outstanding First Young Adult Novel contest; the 1989 International Reading Association Children’s Book Award, Older Reader Category; and a 1990 Golden Kite Honor Book Award from the Society of Children’s Book Writers. It was named a Best Book for Young Adults by the American Library Association.

Readers familiar with that highly praised novel will recognize Sundara and her aunt in “Bride Price.” Those who have not yet read it will surely want to read more about Sundara’s life and what brought her to America.

Since Children of the River, Linda Crew has published Someday I’ll Laugh About This, about a twelve-year-old girl coping with growth and change at the family beach cabin on the Oregon coast; Nekomah Creek, the story of a nine-year-old boy who begins to feel insecure about his slightly unconventional family (an ALA Notable Children’s Book); its companion, Nekomah Creek Christmas; and Ordinary Miracles, a novel for adults about life, death, marriage, and trying to have babies. Her most recent novel is Fire on the Wind.
